AI & Wire Harness Industry Glossary
Bridging the terminology gap between data scientists and manufacturing engineers.
- AOI (Automated Optical Inspection)
- Traditional camera-based inspection relying on hardcoded geometric rules (e.g., measuring bounding boxes). Highly susceptible to false rejects in variable environments.
- Bellmouth
- The flare at the back of the wire barrel of a crimped terminal. It prevents the sharp edge of the terminal from cutting into the wire strands. AI vision systems frequently monitor for missing bellmouths.
- CNN (Convolutional Neural Network)
- A class of deep neural networks commonly applied to analyzing visual imagery. The primary AI architecture used to replace traditional rule-based AOI for detecting complex defects like stray strands.
- Formboard (Nailboard)
- A physical board with a 1:1 scale drawing and pegs/nails used to guide the layout, routing, and taping of a wire harness during manual assembly. Increasingly being augmented by AR projections.
